On 26–27 November 2024, the 9th Forum of Knowledge and Innovation in Agriculture was held in Warsaw under the motto “Technologies and systems for agriculture of the future”. The conference, organized by the Agricultural Advisory Centre in Brwinów, Radom Branch, was held under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The main objective of the forum was to transfer knowledge and information on innovative solutions in agriculture, to promote good practices, and to exchange experience in agricultural production and farm management. During one of the thematic sessions, Elżbieta Sowula-Skrzyńska, PhD, gave a lecture on “Estimating greenhouse gas emissions on farms with animal production”.
As part of this year’s edition, a competition was held for the most interesting innovative solutions in agriculture, in which Elżbieta Sowula-Skrzyńska, PhD, from the Department of Production Systems and Environment at the National Research Institute of Animal Production, presented her innovation “Climate effectiveness calculator for cattle and pig farms”, for which she was awarded second prize.
When awarding the award, it was emphasized that the “Climate effectiveness calculator for cattle and pig farms” (GHG calculator) is a tool designed to assess and improve the environmental performance of agricultural activities, particularly in livestock production. Its purpose is to quantify GHG emissions and identify opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint of cattle and pig farms. The calculator supports informed decisions on emission reduction strategies, while supporting sustainable and economically viable practices. Its broader aim is to promote climate-friendly farming methods, while keeping them practical and cost-effective.
The work on the calculator was carried out within the framework of the project entitled: “Climate-friendly Polish beef and pork of high quality”, contract number 00042.DDD.6509.00049.2019.07 – action M16 /ARMiR/ Cooperation. The following entities participated in the research: the National Research Institute of Animal Production, the Union of Producers and Employers of the Meat Industry, the Polish Association of Beef Cattle Producers, the Institute of Rural and Agricultural Development of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as individual farms.
