Research work has begun at the newly established cryopreservation laboratory at the Department of Reproductive Biotechnology and Cryoconservation (ZBRK) of the National Research Institute of Animal Production. The investment was carried out as part of project no. IZ.KPOD.01.19-IP.04-0007/23, co-financed by the National Reconstruction Plan (KPO) and the European Union – NextGenerationEU Instrument.
Thanks to the modernization of the research infrastructure, Poland’s first highly specialized laboratory for cryogenic preservation and evaluation of biological material from all animal species: farm animals, companion animals, and wild animals – has been created. Native breeds, whose preservation is crucial for the conservation of biodiversity, also occupy a special place.
As part of the research work, the first straws with boar semen have already been frozen using the patented ZBRK technology, which ensures high quality of the material after thawing. This is a milestone in the ex situ conservation of genetic resources and the development of advanced scientific research.
The completed project “Modernization and equipping of the cryopreservation laboratory”, with a total value of PLN 1,291,369.48, has enabled the creation of comprehensive and modern technological facilities for the cryopreservation of biological material.
The laboratory has been equipped with:
- a modern sperm freezing line,
- specialized semen analysers,
- refrigerated centrifuges,
- precision climate chambers,
- devices for long-term storage of material in liquid nitrogen.
The new infrastructure enables the preparation, quality assessment, and safe storage of biological material, which significantly increases the Institute’s capabilities in the field of animal breeding, genetic conservation, and biodiversity research.
