On 11 September 2026, the Third Balice Native Breeds Fair and a scientific conference on small ruminant breeding took place at the National Research Institute of Animal Production in Balice.
The Fair was organised by the Department of Sheep and Goat Breeding of the National Research Institute of Animal Production, in cooperation with the Association of Breeders and Enthusiasts of Native Goat Breeds. The outdoor event was held on the Institute’s premises in Balice from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Ten exhibitors participated in the event, presenting local products associated with the breeding of native animal breeds. The Fair provided an opportunity to meet breeders and producers, exchange experiences and raise awareness of the importance of conserving native breeds and supporting products originating from local farms.
Invited breeders and producers showcased products from their farms. Visitors could sample goat’s and cow’s cheeses, dairy products, herbal products and other local specialities. The products were also available for purchase. However, the Fair offered much more than tastings and shopping. An important part of the event was the opportunity to meet breeders in person, discuss native animal breeds, their significance and conservation, and participate in educational activities and attractions prepared especially for younger visitors.
This year’s event also featured an exhibition of small ruminants and other small farm animals. Visitors could see Carpathian and Sandomierz goats, Wrzosówka and Olkuska sheep, as well as Popielno rabbits in specially prepared enclosures. Participants included Institute staff, residents of nearby communities, primary school pupils, kindergarten children and students from an agricultural school. The programme also featured a competition for primary and secondary school students. At 11:30 a.m., visitors enjoyed a demonstration of Border Collies working with a herd of goats.
Despite the unpredictable weather, the event attracted considerable interest. We would like to extend our special thanks to the exhibitors, breeders, producers, partners, visitors, pupils, teachers and everyone involved in organising the Fair.
Following the outdoor activities, a scientific conference entitled “Native Goat Breeds – Tradition, Recent Advances in Breeding and Genetic Biodiversity” began at 12:00 noon at the Institute’s Palace.
The conference was an important part of the event, bringing together scientific knowledge and the practical experience of breeders and producers. The programme addressed current developments in breeding and genetic resources conservation programmes, emerging challenges in the conservation breeding of native goat breeds, and breed standards.
The speakers included:
- Dr Eng. Jacek Sikora, who delivered a presentation entitled “Current Aspects of Breeding and the Development of the Genetic Resources Conservation Programme”.
- Monika Majcher, who discussed modern methods of identifying sheep and goats using microchips.
- Dr hab. Jarosław Kański, Professor at the University of Agriculture in Krakow, who conducted a nutrition workshop focusing on small ruminants and shared practical knowledge of sheep and goat feeding.
The programme also included the topic “Agricultural Retail Trade (RHD) – Behind the Scenes: Pros and Cons”.
The conference provided a valuable platform for exchanging knowledge, experiences and practical solutions relevant to breeders. We would like to thank all the speakers for their informative presentations and the participants for their attendance, questions and active engagement in the discussions.
The Third Balice Native Breeds Fair once again demonstrated that native breeds represent much more than an important part of our heritage. They also reflect the people, passion, knowledge and local products associated with animal breeding, as well as a shared responsibility for preserving biodiversity for future generations.
Both the Fair and the scientific conference attracted a large number of participants. We would like to thank everyone who joined us and contributed to making this event possible.
