- the evaluation of fattening and slaughter traits with station method,
- the analysis and modification of the methods of evaluation of sheep breeding and productive value,
- the development and publishing of the results of the evaluation of breeding value, fattening and slaughter traits of sheep, productive value of animals included in conservation programmes,
- the evaluation of polymorphism and gene expression of economically important sheep productive traits,
- genetic factors determining the quality of products of sheep origin and the evaluation of the quality of the products,
- conducting and management of database on national sheep genetic resources (flock monitoring),
- exerting technical supervision over functioning of Ram Testing Station in the Pawłowice Experimental Station and conservation sheep breeding in Experimental Stations (also companies) of the Institute,
- the improvement of the rules of protection of sheep breeds included in in situ and ex situ conservation breeding programmes using the most recent biotechnological achievements of reproduction,
- the reintroduction of native and conservation breeds of goats and sheep into the regions of their natural origin,
- the use of methods of molecular genetics in monitoring of sheep genetic diversity,
- supervision over the realization of sheep genetic resources conservation programmes (accepting flocks to participate in genetic resources conservation programmes, record-keeping),
- collecting, storing and systematic completing of tissues (blood, m. longissimus dorsi, liver, kidney fat, external fat) and biological material coming from sheep (in the form of semen, embryos and oocytes),
- cooperation with national and international organizations and breeders in the field of protection and sustainable use of sheep genetic resources,
- joining the activities leading to the development of national market of native lamb and sheep meat and the increase of sheep population in Poland,
- multifunctionality of sheep breeding.
Realizes the tasks resulting from the Convention on Biological Diversity ratified by the Republic of Poland in the field of protection and sustainable use of sheep and goat genetic resources, consisting particularly in
- conducting and management of database on national sheep and goat genetic resources (flock monitoring),
- conducting activity in the field of development and supervision over the realization of farm animal genetic resources conservation programmes (accepting flocks to participate in genetic resources conservation programmes, record-keeping),
- keeping books of animals included in genetic resources conservation programmes,
- issuing breeding certificates and the certificates of including flocks in genetic resources conservation programme,
- cooperation with FAO in the field of the realization of the Global Strategy for the Management of Farm Animal Resources,
- cooperation with national and international organizations and breeders in the field of conservation and sustainable use of farm animal genetic resources.
